A 30 bedded Hospital of Metro Railway, Kolkata is situated at 120 Deshapran Sasmal Road, Kolkata - 700 033. The medical facilities available include Inpatient care, Outdoor treatment and facilities for certain Investigations. The benefits can be availed by Metro Railway employees, their dependant family members and also retired Railway employees who have registered with this Hospital. Apart from the Hospital, Outpatient care is also available at First-aid Post at Noapara and Lock-up Dispensaries at Metro Bhawan and Belgachia. However, patients of Metro Railway have to be referred to Hospitals of Eastern & South Eastern Railways for critical care indoor treatment as well as for specialist care in some disciplines that are not available at present. Similarly, a number of special investigations are also unavailable and patients have to go to other Railway hospitals whenever such tests are necessary. Metro Railway Medical Department has consistently endeavoured to provide quality health care notwithstanding the limited facilities available. Proposal for a upgraded 75 bedded Hospital for Metro Railway was included in the Railway Budget for the year 2010-2011 presented in Parliament by the then Honourable Railway Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee and foundation stone of the upcoming Hospital named as Tapan Sinha Memorial Hospital (TMSH) was laid by her on 08.01.2010 and construction work was undertaken by Engineering Department of Metro Railway. First phase of the new Hospital comprising of a modern Physiotherapy Unit was inaugurated on 01.03.2011 construction work of the second phase is in progress. The completed Hospital will comprise of An OPD Block of Basement + 6 floors and an IPD Block of Basement + 9 floors and will have state of the art care in all specialties under one roof.
Ø28th May, 1990 – Health Unit at Tollygunge started functioning. Patients requiring Indoor treatment were referred to nearby Railway Hospitals i.e. B. R. Singh Hospital, Central Hospital Garden Reach, Howrah Orthopedics etc.
ØProposal for up gradation of the Health Unit at Tollygunge to 30 bedded Hospital initiated and included in Railway budget for the year 2001-02.
ØThe 30 bedded Hospital was inaugurated in December 2004.
ØIndoor facilities started on 15th June, 2005 with various contractual services viz. Casualty Service, Nursing Service, OPD and Technical service, Catering Service, Cleaning Service etc., as sufficient manpower was not available.
ØAfter one year of functioning, Hospital Indoor services were kept suspended from 29.07.2006 to 07.12.2008
ØIndoor Services restarted on 8th December, 2008 with re-engagement of contractual staff through agencies. For past one year (2011 -2012) average Bed Occupancy has been around 80% and on occasions has crossed 100%. Many complicated cases have been fully cured.
ØFurther up-gradation of the Hospital to 75 bedded multi-specialty Hospital was declared in the Railway Budget of 2009-2010 and foundation stone of the upcoming Hospital named as Tapan Sinha Memorial Hospital (TMSH) was laid on 08.01.2010 by then honorable Railway Minister Smt. Mamata Banerjee.
ØFirst phase of the new Hospital comprising of a modern Physiotherapy Unit was inaugurated on 01.03.2011 construction work of the second phase is in progress.
ØTender being finalized for Sound and Vibration reduction work on the adjacent Metro Railway Viaduct.
ØCompletion of the IPD Block is expected by June, 2013 and upgraded services can be commenced thereafter subject to availability of adequate manpower.
