1.0 Major Achievements
Metro Railway, Kolkata passed through a very chaotic situation from 1997 to 1999. Reliability and punctuality were at its lowest ebb due to large number of ineffective assets and their failures mainly due to non-availability of imported components and spares. Since then Metro Railway has successfully come out of the rut and could regain its position of pride and today its performance is well appreciated by the travelling public of Kolkata. Some of the major highlights / achievements are-
1.1. Indigenous Development:
At present almost all the equipments of BHEL & NGEF rakes have been indigenised.This has saved crores of rupees.Most of the firms who have developed the materials are in and around Kolkata. This has improved the availability of the materials.
1.2. Setting-up of Rolling Stock Maintenance Depot at Noapara:
The TOL Car Shed was merged with Noapara Car shed in January 2004 to augment the man-power resources and to restrict the inspection schedule as per periodicity. After the merger, TOL Car Shed is working as a satellite shed where only trip checking and safe to run examination of the rakes are carried out on round the clock basis.
1.3. Provision of one complete new 5th feeder arrangement along with associated HSCB and associated 2nos. motor operated isolators at Dum Dum sub-station:
One complete new 5th feeder arrangement along with associated HSCBs and 2nos. motorised isolators, which were deficient since beginning of Metro services, have been commissioned at Dum Dum sub-station. This has improved the reliability of 3rd rail power supply in case of any defect in the normal HSCBs.
1.4. Improvement in station lighting:
Lighting in the south section from Rabindra Sarobar station to Esplanade station, Belgachia & Shyambazar stations have been improved by removing old Perspex sheet covers, duly cleaning and painting the interior of light fittings including repair and replacement of damaged fittings caused by seepage of water and removing the old reflectors by new reflectors. The lighting modification work is in progress in the remaining stations in north section.The level of illumination has improved from an average of about 75 Lux to about 150-200 Lux. Ceiling and grills have also been cleaned and painted to give a bright look to the stations. With this modification work, it has now been possible to keep 75 % of central row lights in off condition for conservation of energy without sacrificing illumination level.
Besides, old fittings at seven Stations have been replaced by energy efficient T5 fittings to improve the illumination level and energy efficiency.
1.5. Replacement of assets:
a.Replacement of air-conditioning plants at underground stations:
· In south section, the oldest AC plants at 5 stations have been replaced with new AC plants consisting of screw type chillers having energy efficient design. AC plants at Jatin Das Park station is under progress. The design parameters of the Chillers and Cooling Towers have been modified for better energy efficiency .AC plant replacement work for rest two stations (Kalighat & Rabindra Sarobar) has already been included in Pink Book 2012-13.
· In respect of north section, the AC plants at all the stations (except Chandni Chawk)have been replaced. The new AC machines (chillers) for these stations use environment friendly R-134a refrigerant and the machines are energy efficient with latest technology.
b.Replacement of Power supply installations
Replacement work of old 33KV, 11 KV, DC & LT panels of underground section has been started on age cum condition basis. MOCBs in the existing panels are also being replaced by VCB. The requirement for augmentation of power supply arrangement for increased frequency is under deliberation.
c.Replacement of Pumping installations
Pumping installations in the south section in underground section has been replaced after completion of codal life.
d.Replacement of escalators:
Phase wise replacement of old escalators has been started.
1.6.Implementation of DMRC report for Improvement of Ventilation and Air Conditioning:
· Semi-closed system (Under Platform Exhaust air re-circulation) has been implemented during AC plant replacement work to improve energy efficiency. Necessary modification in the ducting arrangement ensures safety requirements during smoke/ fire.
· All air washeries have been replaced with 10 micron dry filters thereby saving electricity consumption. There have been very good improvement in the Quality of air insidestations/tunnels as compared to surrounding atmospheric air.
· Digital Protection & Control System (DPCS) has been installed for power protection system.
· Smoke extraction facility for under ground section: To improve the smoke extraction facility in case of smoke/ fire in underground section, first phase of work will been undertaken.
1.8.Energy Efficiency Drive:
The following action has been taken to improve energy efficiency:
· Provision of VVVF drives for the ventilation fan in phased manner.
· Provision ofSolar power panels at Metro Rail Bhavan and 50 nos. of parapet lighting in elevated section.
· Time & group switching of lighting system through SCADA.
· Optimized operation of AC plants at stations.
1.9.Reduction in POH Cycle Time of rakes:
Prior to the year 2008-09, POH out-turn was 3 coaches per month with the cycle time of around 120 days for a full rake. From 2008-09, POH out-turn increased to 4 coaches per month. As a result, 06 rakes were turned out with average cycle time of around 35 working days in 2010-11. In 2011-12, 6 rakes were turned out with an average cycle time of 34 working days.
The old SCADA system of ITI make has been replaced with state-of-the art PC based Remote Control System (RCC). The new mimic panel has been installed in centralised integrated control room. The following additional features are incorporated in the present SCADA:
· Control and monitoring of station Ventilation fans, station lighting and tunnel lighting at RCC.
· Monitoring of station Air Conditioning Compressor & secondary chiller pump at RCC.
· Temperature & humidity monitoring at platform & mezzanine of underground stations at RCC.
· Monitoring of different electrical parameters like current, voltage, power & energy etc of different ASS & TSS at RCC.
